Tyler Perry to Spike Lee, ‘Go Straight to Hell’
Well, the battle of the Black directors continues.
Apparently, Tyler Perry is tired of being asked about what Spike Lee thinks of his films. Tuesday, during a press conference to promote his latest flick, Madea’s Big Happy Family, Perry went off after being asked by a reporter about criticisms of his work.
“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee,” Perry said. “Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me; I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him — he talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!”

The directors’ beef stems from a 2009 comment in which Lee hinted—ok, down right asserted—that Perry’s films harkened back to the bad old days of cooning.
“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery,” Lee said. “I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better.”
During the press conference Perry went on to say he doesn’t understand why people, especially Black people, criticize his work.
“I don’t even understand it. There’s so many people who walk around…and this is where the whole Spike Lee thing comes from — the negativity, ‘This is Stepin Fetchit,’ ‘This is coonery,’ ‘This is buffoonery’ — and they try to get people to get on this bandwagon with them, to get this mob mentality to come against what I’m doing.
But what they don’t understand is this, and this is what I want to make perfectly clear to everybody, especially black people: I’vhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gife never seen Jewish people attack Seinfeld and say, ‘This is a stereotype.’ I’ve never seen Italian people attack The Sopranos, I’ve never seen Jewish people complaining about Mrs. Doubtfire or Dustin Hoffman and what they were doing in Tootsie. I never saw it. It’s always Black people, and this is something that I cannot undo.”
As The Root aptly pointed out, I guess TP never heard of UNICO and their criticisms of Jersey Shore, Mob Wives, and films and TV shows that portray Italian-Americans negatively.
Either way, Perry’s tired of hearing about Spike Lee…but does Spike have a point? Can Tyler Perry “do better”?
You tell us!
