In case you haven’t heard already on Facebook or Twitter, or the many commercials advertising, today is National Donut Day. The major donut chains are celebrating by giving you a free donut.
If you (or your kids) go to Dunkin’ Donuts, you’ll get one free donut with the purchase of a drink. If you go to Krispy Kreme, everyone gets a free donut- no purchase required.
You can guess which store kids will more likely flock to.
Growing up, my mother could never pass up a bargain (she still can’t, in fact, to this day) so if a store was offering something for free, a loaf of bread, a plastic cup or a junky toy, we were gonna get it. There is always a temptation to get something for nothing, even if you don’t necessarily like it. In the case of donuts, who doesn’t like a donut, especially children.
While donuts are a pretty empty, high-caloric snacks, kids love them. If you don’t normally patronize these donut chains and the kids are eating healthy all the rest of the week, I think getting one to celebrate National Donut Day is pretty harmless.
And it is Friday.
Will you stop by Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme for your free donut? When is it OK to relax food rules? At parties and holidays only?
